The company was founded in Providence, Rhode Island in 1846 by Richard Cross whose family originally hailed from the Midlands in England.

Cross produced the first stylographic pen in 1879, the ancestor to the ball point pen, and more than a decade before Lewis Waterman manufactured the first commercially viable fountain pen.
